Prep soccer at Wilsonville High School

The fall prep sports schedule is now in full swing, with varsity contests taking place virtually every night of the week right now.

Last night was no exception, as I headed out to Wilsonville High School to cover the girls soccer team in action against class 6A Grant High School of Portland.

After trouncing Madison High School two days earlier to the tune of 10-0, the Wilsonville girls were unprepared for the intensity the Lady Generals threw at them in the first half of Thursday’s match. Grant threatened for much of that time and finally broke through with about 10 minutes left in the half.

A second goal came early in the second half on a beautifully played header off a corner kick. After that, the Generals locked down their own end of the pitch and kept Wilsonville from ever truly threatening to score. The final was a 2-0 win for the visitors.

This game proved to be productive from my point of view. First, the contest was rescheduled from an original time of 7 p.m to 4:30 p.m. Instead of a difficult night shoot, I enjoyed slightly diffused afternoon sunlight and fast shutter speeds that allowed me to capture shots like the one at top of defender Jill Riewald.
